The NU Women's Water Polo squad is a club team in the BIG TEN division.  Other teams in our division include: Michigan State University,  Ohio State University, Purdue University, University of Illinois, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, and University of Wisconsin.  Indiana University only supports a varsity team and competes solely in varsity leagues.  Penn State University also has a club team but, due to their distant location, they are a member of a CWPA league that is home to club teams closer to them.

Being a club team means that we do not have scholarship players, but we can have players who would not normally have eligibility for a collegiate team play with us (graduate students and students with varsity eligibility previously used).

We practice year round, but our season is mainly in the winter quarter.  We travel to tournaments around the midwest where we face other teams from our conference and teams outside of the conference that are typically local to the area.  Some years, we go on a training trip to California during spring break where we play teams that we do not see regularly.  This serves many purposes, but mainly helps us prepare for BIG TENS, our divisional championship tournament.  The top team from this tournament will represent the conference at NATIONALS, where all the conference champions compete for the national title.  BIG TENS is typically several weeks after our spring break, and NATIONALS a few weeks after that.
