A Man of Character:
Usman demonstrates excellent moral character and is best described as a very mature and insightful young person. In high school, Usman founded the Student Affairs Committee and the Model United Nations Club. He was very concerned about giving students a voice in the politics of their school, and opening up channels of dialogue with administration. At Northwestern, Usman double majors in International Studies and Political Science. He plans to become an attorney with a focus on human rights and international law, and hopes to someday run for political office. He is passionate about improving the conditions of the impoverished and the underprivileged and understands the importance of an education. His personal goals include fostering a better learning environment for his peers and the community.

A Man of Action:
At Northwestern, Usman has been very active on campus through his involvement in numerous organizations. Usman has served on the Academic Committee for the past three years, and has focused on getting students involved in the process. At the same time, Usman has a wide range of experience in leadership positions including Greek life, cultural student groups, and business organizations. However, he has always kept the Academic Committee a priority, and continues to fulfill his responsibility to his fellow students. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball, reading, and listening to music. Usman is truly a champion in both the classroom and the community. For details on Usman’s accomplishments during his three year tenure on the Academic Committee, please see the “Experience” tab on this website.

How does the Academic Committee affect US?

3 years of experience on Academic Committee Serving US!

For almost three years now, I have been an active member on the Academic Committee, and have had the privilege to serve as a chair of the Academic Advising and Islamic Studies Program subcommittees. I have also worked on a variety of other initiatives that affect the average student such as organizing alternative programming for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, working on campus wireless, increasing minority enrollment, and working on the Kellogg Lecture Series. After working closely with different student groups, administrators and faculty, I have passed legislation through the senate to enact some of these changes I believe are important to my fellow students. For example, just last quarter in Senate, I proposed the Advising Fair Bill, which was unanimously passed, and will improve student access to academic advising within the Weinberg School of Arts and Sciences. During the fall and spring quarters, the ASG Academic Committee will host an Academic Advising Fair open to all undergraduate students. Individual departmental advisors and college advisors will have the opportunity to interact with students and answer any questions about their departments and majors. These are just a few examples of some of our achievements, but at the same time, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.
