About SNMA … The Northwestern University Feinberg School of
Medicine chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is a
non-profit, university-sponsored organization whose mission is to provide
support for medical students of color by focusing on their needs, concerns
and overall well-being as they relate to the field of medicine. We are
committed to ensuring that the education and services medical students
receive are culturally sensitive to the needs of a diverse population, and,
through our various programs, we aim to improve awareness of these needs
amongst our colleagues. In order to properly care for patients representing
the massive array of ethnicities, cultures and experiences that our society
represents, it is important that medical professionals be equally diverse,
and the increased recruitment and retention of minority students is one of
the most important goals of SNMA–Feinberg. More than just a voice for medical students,
SNMA–Feinberg is also concerned with the health disparities that
disproportionately affect communities of color, and we conduct programs that
are designed to serve the health needs of underserved communities. Our
membership represents the diversity of our society, and through seminars,
speakers, community service projects, conferences and dialogues, we strive to
meet our goals. SNMA–Feinberg firmly believes that awareness and
support of the aforementioned issues not only benefits minority medical
students, patients and communities, but also benefits society as a whole. Established
in 1964 by medical students from At
Northwestern, SNMA is as much an emotional and educational support as it is a
connection to the community. Moreover, the emotional support that SNMA
provides its members is not limited to the Feinberg School of Medicine
community. The Feinberg chapter of SNMA has sponsored several inter-medical
school socials in the Chicagoland area to facilitate networking and dialogue
between medical school students with similar goals and concerns with regard
to healthcare disparities, diversity in medicine, assisting the underserved,
etc. Thus, SNMA–Feinberg promotes fellowship and solidarity within the
minority medical student community on multiple levels. SNMA–Feinberg
members have been active participants in the SNMA National Conferences of
years past, and we look forward to the continued interaction with other SNMA
chapters nationally. |
