About Green Cup Green Cup is a six week long competition between NU residences to conserve the most energy and water. Throughout the six weeks, there will be various events and opportunities to learn about conservation practices in our daily lives and how they contribute to the bigger picture. The biggest opportunity for "green education" will be Green Cup firesides, which will take place at every dorm and residential college. These firesides will consist of fun, interactive games and, yes, free food! In the competition, dormitories are divided into two categories for scoring, those with dining
halls and those without dining halls. The scoring for each category is done the same way, but
separately.
This year's Green Cup competition will also take dorm resident attendance at various Green Cup sponsored events into account when scoring each dormitory. At firesides and at the speaker event on February 12th, people will sign in and indicate which residence they live in. For each residence category (with dining halls, without dining halls), we will add up the number of participation points gained by all the residences in each category and divide the number of participation points from each residence by the total. The percentage each residence receives will serve as the residence’s participation score, which will count for 25% of the total score. Actual utility reductions will constitute 75% of Green Cup scoring. This year, electricity and
water readings will be taken from each dormitory on January 20th, February 3rd, February 17th and March 3rd. The first reading is to establish each building's initial meter reading. Electricity and Water baselines, in the form of kWh/person and ft2/person respectively, were established by averaging 2 week interval readings from the last two years (2007 and 2008) during these same interval periods. The water and electricity usages per person for each period will be compared to their respective baselines and the percent reduction from the baselines will be calculated.
One hundred points for each utility will be distributed to dormitories based on the proportion of their percent reduction for each utility compared to the total sum of each dormitory's percent reduction for the particular utility. Should a dormitory actually increase in usage in either utility, the dormitory will be considered to have a 0% reduction. The 100 points for each utility will be distributed after each period so that a total of 600 points
will be awarded for reductions for each category (i.e. dining or non-dining).
