green cupAs with any major change, lowering humans' impact on the environment begins at the individual level. If we cannot make personal sacrifices and adjustments in our daily lives, we will not be able to succeed at the national or global level. Therefore, SEED sponsors the annual Green Cup at Northwestern. For six weeks every Winter Quarter, the students in residence halls and colleges work hard to lower their per-capita energy and water use, competing for various prizes. Green Cup has proved to be a fun and fairly simple way to spread awareness about the consequences of our daily actions and encourage more sustainable habits. Go to GC website. top

fall speaker The influence one person can have on an audience is monumental when that person wields the pertinent tools to effectively and emphatically relate a message. It is with this theory in mind that SEED works to bring prominent leaders in our society to Northwestern. By communicating to the masses, the presenter has the capability to inspire and engage the NU community from the beginning of the year so as to stir action for change and improvement. In past years we've had Ralph Nader, Jeff Corwin, Arianna Huffington, and Bill McKibben. To find out about this year's Fall Speaker, check out our news & events page. top
environmental intersectionsThe environment is intricately connected to numerous other aspects of society. From consumer consumption to workers’ rights, there are relevant environmental concerns and consequences. In recognition of this global weave, SEED began the Intersections Lecture Series, which changed to Environmental Intersections in 2009 and became a series of events that engage the community at various levels, not just through lectures. As a new event, SEED looks forward to its future and hopes to further its reaches at Northwestern. For current lecture series, see our news & events page. philfestIn 2000, a beloved NU student and SEED member, Phil Semmer, passed away while studying abroad in Australia. An ardent environmentalist, bluegrass and jam band fanatic, and an outdoors enthusiast, he lived with admirable ideals. SEED honors Phil's passions with Philfest, an annual outdoor benefit concert. Although the event is free, donations are collected for the Rocky Mountain Institute, a nonprofit organization that Phil was intending to intern with. Philfest is a great opportunity to bring the Northwestern and Evanston communities together in a celebration of the continually evolving relationship between humans and the environment. top

"The United States has been shamefully uninvolved in negotiations about climate. It's been sad beyond words," said Bill McKibben as the 2008 fall speaker. Read more at The Daily Northwestern.

Since publicity is crucial to any successful event, SEED is always looking for new ways to get the word out that have virtually no environmental impact. got ideas? let us know!
