The 61st annual Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta greeted its participants, as always, with freezing temperatures and shifty winds. Throughout the course of the three day regatta, the Northwestern Sailing team was constantly changing crews and strategy to best fit the conditions. James Costakis skippered A division, with Christine Heckmann and Erin Miller alternating as crews. Tod Reynolds was the B division skipper, with Amanda Snyder as crew.
Being an intersectional regatta, the Northwestern team was battling against several east coast schools that traveled out for the event. Seeing great improvements from the previous year, Northwestern placed fourth overall in the regatta, behind Rhode Island (3 rd), Wisconsin (2nd) and Vermont (1st). Within the Midwest, Northwestern placed second behind Wisconsin, winning out in the long term rivalry experienced with Michigan and Minnesota.
Throughout the weekend, camaraderie was abundant. A new tradition was begun: Chicago Yacht Club hosted the first annual Butterball, and independent event where competitors could socialize and dance. Mingling among east and Midwest sailors was promoted by the DJ and several bartenders. With birth of new traditions though comes the extinguishing of old traditions. The custom of throwing graduating seniors into the freezing lake was ended, due to safety concerns for the participants. |
