Commodore

The Commodore is responsible for the general administration and management of the team. This includes maintaining a good relationship with the athletic department, working with the university administration to ensure the smooth functioning of the team, and running all meetings.

The Commodore is also the head of the team’s decision-making process. S/he has a responsibility to maintain a dialogue with other members of the executive board and team in general, however the final say in decisions pertaining to the functioning of the team goes to the Commodore.

The Commodore has various day-to-day duties. In conjunction with the Treasurer, the Commodore has financial control over the team and ensures that it stays in good financial standing with the university. The Commodore also assists the Captains in arranging and scheduling regattas and in running practices.

In addition to his/her everyday duties, the Commodore is also responsible for overseeing and assisting in miscellaneous team activities. This includes assisting in fundraising and alumni activities.

Captain

The two Captains are responsible for assisting the Commodore in his/her administrative tasks and for working to promote the development of the team.

The Captains are responsible for running daily practices. This includes, but is not limited to, coordinating the opening of the boathouse with the boathouse staff, running the safety boat (or finding someone else to run the safety boat), arranging sailing pairs, and pre-planning practice drills and activities.

The Captains are also responsible for scheduling and arranging for team participation in regattas. They attend the MCSA Midwinters meeting in order to sign the team up for spring and fall regattas, assign individual team members to sail in them, RSVP to the host school, and arrange for transportation to regattas.

During winter quarter, the Captains are responsible for holding weekly sailing seminars. This includes booking a room in Norris for the meetings, announcing the meetings ahead of time, creating an agenda for the meetings, and inviting guest speakers.

Treasurer

The Treasurer is responsible for managing the team SOFO (the NU “bank”) accounts. To clear up any ambiguity, the team cannot have any outside bank accounts, and all team money must pass through SOFO. Managing the accounts consists of keeping track of the SOFO balance, collecting and depositing donations and dues, reimbursing team members and making payments in accordance with SOFO rules and regulations, and keeping concise and accurate records of every transaction made. The Treasurer is also responsible for creating an annual budget proposal for submission to the university and for clearing this proposal with the Commodore and Executive Board. Finally, the Treasurer is responsible for making sure that the members of the Executive Board are well informed about the team’s SOFO account status.

Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for keeping track of undergraduate and alumni contact information. Keeping many people involved with the team is incredibly important to NUST. The Secretary also keeps meeting minutes, and can delegate and organize the creation of our quarterly newsletter. Organization is the name of the game for the Secretary.

Alumni Chair

The Alumni Relations Chairs are responsible for creating, maintaining, and promoting positive relationships with team alumni. In particular, the Alumni Relations Chairs are responsible for organizing the annual alumni dinner, publishing the alumnae newsletter, updating and maintaining the alumni database, organizing any alumni regattas, and assisting the Fundraising Chairs in all fundraising activities involving or asking of alumni.

Fundraising Chair

The Fundraising Chairs are responsible for thinking up and executing creative fundraising plans. They should aim to have a few small fundraising activities in the fall and spring and should schedule larger events for the winter quarter. The Fundraising Chairs are responsible for signing up for stadium clean-ups, reminding team members of clean-up dates, and encouraging and monitoring clean-up attendance. They are also responsible for organizing committees to run larger fundraising events and for keeping the Executive Board well informed about all potential and planned fundraising ventures.

Recruitment Chair

The Recruitment Chairs are responsible for seeking out new sailing talent. In particular, they are responsible for maintaining contact with incoming freshman that express an interest in sailing, signing up for and running the Team booth at the Fall activities fair, creating an information pamphlet to hand out to prospective sailors at the activities fair and on campus during fall, and informing all interested students about the time and location of fall tryouts.
