The Northwestern University Sailing Team (NUST) sails out of Evanston, Illinois, the first suburb north of Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan. Because of our ideal waterfront location, we are able to run practices from our on campus facility. Sailing on Lake Michigan provides us with a great variety of conditions: everything from light land breeze and flat water to 30 knot northerlies and 3-5 foot chop. The boathouse, which is maintained by a full-time university staff, has a new fleet of twelve 420’s, two FJ’s, and 16 Lasers. Sailing at Northwestern is competitive and fun at the same time. We run practices on campus Monday - Thursday from September to November, and April to June.
In addition to the organized practice time during the week, team members have the opportunity to travel to regattas throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Our team is very competitive often sending teams to 3 different regattas in a single weekend. Regattas include not only local midwest events but also competition in many other districts. In recent years NUST has attended events in Rhode Island, New York, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Louisianna. In the Fall of 2007 season NUST also qualified for ICSA Sloop and Singe Handed National Championships in addition to placing 2nd at the districts fall championship.
There’s more to our program than just sailing. As an entirely student run organization, team members are not only sailors, they are also the decision makers and leaders of the program. If you’re interested in gaining leadership experience, or you just want to have say in how your team is run, our club sport program has many advantages.
