History

The Northwestern Sailing Team can trace its history back to the late 1950’s when teams practiced in downtown Chicago, with the NU boathouse constructed on campus in 1974. Since that time the NU sailing team has ranged from a relaxed learn-to-sail program to a nationally competitive team attending numerous national championships and graduating two college all Americans: Roslyn Rea who received sailing’s top honor in 1987 and Scotia Ryer in both 1995/1996. Today Northwestern continues to be a top school in the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association placing 2nd at the 2007 Fall Dingy Championship. Additionally, Northwestern was the only Midwest school to attend both the Single-Handed and Sloop Nationals in the fall of 2007.
