Womens Team Attends National Championship

The Women’s Nationals Championship at the New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island was an unforgettable experience for our women’s team. They entered the regatta excited to tackle their first Nationals and compete against the best sailors in the nation. After three days of intense conditions and competition, the girls were exhausted and grateful for the lessons they learned. Our A team skipper, junior Liz Hines, sailed with junior Teresa Fox and freshman Heather Knowlton, ending in 16th place and receiving one commendable 12th place finish. Our B skipper, senior Erin Miller, sailed with junior Meredith Laitos and sophomore Amanda Snyder and ended the regatta in 18th. (more)

NUST Qualifies for Semi-Final Nationals at USC

This season, NUST qualified for co-ed Dinghy Semifinals, hosted by the University of Southern California in Long Beach, CA. We sent five people who were graciously hosted by teammate Hannah Dean and her mother in their home in Newport Beach. Not surprisingly, this regatta turned out to be the toughest competition any of us had sailed against. With 18 of the top 36 teams in the country competing to qualify for Nationals, we had our hands full dealing with Varsity teams and coaches that have the pleasure of sailing year-round. (more)

NUST Places 3rd at Team Race Qualifyers

NUST competed in the qualifying regatta for Team Racing Nationals on the weekend of April 5th, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The weather was unseasonably warm, but the forecast for Lake Mendota at UW Madison was sunny with a scattering of icebergs. So in order to avoid a potential Titanic situation, the event was moved to Sheridan Shore Yacht Club just a few miles up the road from Northwestern on Lake Michigan. (more)

Big Win at Buckeye Intersectional

The 2008 Buckeye Intersectional was slow racing with good results for Northwestern. Light wind and poor weather made for a weekend of disrupted sailing, but NU came out on top and reclaimed the Buckeye Trophy for the second time ever and the first time since 1999. We sealed a narrow victory and defeated a superb fleet that include the varsity team of Christopher Newport. Freshman Eric DeFeo and sophomore Amanda Snyder sailed well together and won the A division, but the true stars of the regatta were juniors Liz Hines and Teresa Fox who put NU on top in the last two races.

1st Place Finish at Wisconson 3-Division

Northwestern 1 took first place at the Wisconsin 3-Way Regatta on the weekend of May 3rd, defeating their Minnesota, Notre Dame and Wisconsin rivals. Sophomore Tod Reynolds sailed a Tech Dinghy while sophomore Eric Defeo and junior Jimmy Costakis skippered 420s with freshmen Kristin McCaffrey, Sharyn Ioffe and Olivia Green. Most of the Saturday races were canceled due to heavy winds, but teams returned to the water on Sunday, content with southwest winds blowing 15-20 knots. (more)
