Hall Description

1835 Hinman, known affectionately as "1835" or "Hinman," is one of the larger residence halls on South Campus. Not only is our ground floor dining hall considered the best place to eat on campus, we also have a convenience store open until 2 a.m. to satisfy late night munchies. We're close to all the South Campus academic buildings (right across the street from Fisk, the journalism building) and just two or three blocks from the heart of downtown Evanston. We have a great mix of freshmen, sophomores and juniors from all majors and schools, and this helps make Hinman a socially diverse and friendly place to live. We have a formal every winter (this year it's at Shedd Aquarium!) and put on many activities throughout the year, like last spring's floor Olympics on the beach (champion: the second floor) and this year's trip to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs.

HISTORY

1835 Hinman

A coeducational residence hall for 280 students, 1835 Hinman opened in fall 1982. It was built as part of a $23 million undergraduate housing initiative in the early 1980s, financed in part by the sale of Dryden Hall, a graduate student residence, and an increase in University housing rates. This initiative was sparked by a grant from the J. L. and Helen Kellogg Foundation to the graduate business school.
