Our events:
Spring Carnival
Every Spring, children are brought from OASIS' sites, local elementary schools, and youth organizations to spend the afternoon with NU students. Student groups create booths and activities with which to entertain the children.
Project Pumpkin
NCDC, a community service group at Northwestern, holds an annual event for Evanston and Chicago children to trick or treat around Halloween. Various student groups plan, design, set up, and run a booth each; OASIS is in charge of the Haunted House.
Speakers
Every quarter, OASIS invites someone from the community to talk about social concerns and how to help our community. We do this in the hope of motivating, encouraging, and providing the opportunity for students to volunteer and actively engage in community service.
Meetings
Site leader meetings
At least once a quarter, the board members will meet with the site leaders to socialize and discuss the progress of our sites. We do this in order to foster more personal relationships and bondage within our organization as well as to get feedback and updates on the sites.
General body meetings
For all the general members and volunteers who are essential to our organization, we hold a general body meeting at least once a quarter to again create a greater feeling of bondage, keep them updated on our events, sites, and other opportunities they can help us with, and thank them for their interest and support.
Fundraisers
Concessions
Every fall quarter, we run concessions at the football games every Saturday to raise funds for our organization. The funds are used for social events or activities which site leaders organize for their sites. If you would like to help us run these concessions, contact our Treasurer, Jeff Peck at (j-peck at northwestern dot edu).
Firesides
Firesides are events held in residential colleges for residents to gather and listen to members of the Northwestern community speak about their work or other special interests. OASIS specifically informs residents about community service, the organization, and our sites. Non-residents of the dorm may also feel free to come!
Recruitment Fairs
Once a quarter we hold big fairs to recruit members and volunteers. Students can learn more about what our organization does, what its goals are, which sites we go out to, and what we do at these sites. The recruitment fairs we organize each quarter are listed below. Please come if you would like to find out more about us or ask any questions!
Fall Quarter: Volunteer Fair
Winter Quarter: Winter Carnival
Outreach Day
OASIS' annual Outreach Day provides Northwestern students with the opportunity to volunteer at a local agency for one Saturday afternoon. Tasks range from mentoring high school students at a college information fair, painting at centers benefiting the mentally ill and developmentally disabled, walking dogs at an animal shelter, and cooking a meal at a shelter for Chicago's homeless. Upon returning to campus, volunteers reconvene for dinner. While eating, they reflect upon and share their experiences.
Celebration of Service
In accordance with our annual tradition, OASIS will hold a celebration to recognize volunteers for their contributions to the community. This event is also an important opportunity to reflect upon the year's work and to set goals for the future.
