Upcoming Home Race
NU Crew has been working hard every morning to get ready for our
next race…right here at home! This Saturday, April 19 we will be
hosting a regatta at the Dammrich Rowing Center (3220 Oakton St.) in
Skokie. Crews from the University of Notre Dame, Wheaton College and
North Park University will be coming out. In the men's varsity 8
event, crews will be competing for the "Alumni Blade" trophy. Races
start at 8 am and should run until about 1 pm. There are several
viewing sites along the course and we strongly encourage anyone in
the Chicagoland area to come and cheer!
Racing season is in full swing!
Last Saturday, the men headed to Spring Lake, MI for the second
running of the Other West Coast Regatta. Nine universities attended
the event, the first major regatta on Spring Lake in over 120 years. It
was a tough day for several of NU's lightweights who rowed up to four
races during the four-hour regatta. NU rowed seven lightweights in the
varsity 8 event and still managed to finish 5th of
the 8 boats that entered. In the lightweight 8 event, NU finished 2nd
to a very improved Grand Valley State University crew, but beat
Ohio State's lightweights. The men are currently training to close the
gap with GVSU before the crews face off again at MACRA in May.
In
a rare turn of events, while the men battled it out in Michigan, the
women headed to St. Louis, MO for the Washington University
Invitational Regatta. The women raced five universities on the
1750-meter course. The day started off strong with the varsity 8
coming in 2nd, overpowering a strong North Park University crew. The
varsity lightweight 4 was narrowly defeated by Washington University,
while the varsity 4 came in 2nd to WashU, but triumphed over NPU.
The novice 4 A boat came in 3rd behind NPU and WashU, but easily
outdistanced its other competitors, including St. Louis University.
New Year's Resolutions
As the new year begins, the men and women of Northwestern
Crew are beginning winter training, gearing up for the
Spring Season. Looking ahead, the Chicago Indoor Erg Race in
February and a training trip at the end of the quarter have the teams
excited and determined to extend the success they earned during the Fall
season.
