Physical Exam Skills Training
This is an opportunity for first years to get a brief introduction to physical exam skills. Third and fourth year students will teach first-years the basic skills and second year students will serve as standardized patients on which the first-years can practice. Skills that will be covered include: vital signs and the cardiovascular, pulmonary, and abdominal exams.

Letter-Writing Meeting
This meeting will be a chance for everyone participating in the letter-writing campaign to personalize their letters while enjoying some pizza. We ask that all members to write letters to their friends and family in support of NU-AID's activities. The money donated through the letter-writing campaign is used directly to buy medication, hygiene kits, and plane tickets for NU-AID's winter and summer trips.

MSF Refugee Camp
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) will be in Chicago from September 19 - 23. During this time, they will be putting on an exhibit in Grant Park called A Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City, where MSF representatives will be giving tours of a mock-refugee camp.
NU AID, GlobeMed, AMSA, and GHECS (Dept Family Med) have reserved a tour on Saturday, September 22 starting at 3pm. The tour should last about 45-60 minutes and will be tailored to medical students.

and Hagley Gap, Jamaica. Everyone associated with Feinberg is invited to come learn about the work we do,
and are welcomed to become more involved. Our trips were a great success, and we look forward to sharing
our experiences with the Feinberg community. Additionally, the members of your new, 2007 NU-AID Executive

Homeless Health Fair
Fourth Presbyterian Church 126 E Chestnut (Chestnut and Michigan)
This health fair is one of many ongoing efforts by NUAID to provide health care and public health
education to the underserved here in Chicago community. Fourth Presbyterian Church has an ongoing
relationship with the homeless population and provides free meals two nights a week; our health
fair will be in conjunction with one of those dinners. We will be screening for diabetes, hypertension,
and obesity. Our targeted health talks for this population will include STDs/safer sex, mental health,
general well-being, and substance abuse.

As part of Public Health Week, NU-AID and GlobeMed will host Nicole Cohen, MD, MSc, from the Chicago
Department of Public Health. She will speak on the history, biology and
public health implications of Flu Pandemics, particularly the threat of avian flu.

speak on "Grassroots Community Development in Jamaica".

Viva - NU-AID Medical Screening Tent
NU-AID will be running a health tent at Viva, Chicago's
summer Latin Music Festival. We will be screening Festival-goers for hypertension and diabetes, and
providing information about common diseases, prevention strategies, and health resources available
in the community.
We need students to volunteer to work at the health tent to take blood pressures,
glucometer readings, and educate the public about these health topics. If you are a new M1, this
is a great way to learn some physical exam skills and get involved in NU-AID! We are also looking for
NU doctors to staff the event. If interested, contact Ana at ana-weil@md.northwestern.edu.

Lunch Talk: "Life and Health in Rural Nicaragua"
An International Health Talk by former Peace Corps Volunteer Kathleen Dickerson, MPH, MEd.
After her years in the Peace Corps Ms. Dickerson started a non-profit organization in the US
to benefit Nicaragua, where she still spends time each year. She will be speaking about life
in Nicaragua, living within Nicaraguan culture, and the health concerns of the population. She
will also address methods for tackling such public health issues as access to water, immunization,
health beliefs and poverty.
This talk is co-sponsored by Physicians for Human Rights. Lunch will be provided.

Chicago Campus programs. Questions will cover all topics, so let’s see who knows more than just the

avoid paying taxes on capital gains.

Patient Database Meeting
This member meeting is to discuss the patient database and patient intake forms used on NU-AID trips.
We will be discussing the format and questions on the form, the goals of collecting this data,
and the questions we are trying to answer with our analysis of the data. People who have worked with
the database and forms previously, past trip members who have input based on their experience with the
forms, and anyone else who is interested is welcome.

Winter Trips to Nicaragua
