Topic B: Protecting Non-Nuclear States from the Nuclear Threat
There are currently seven states that have successfully tested nuclear weapons – the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and the People’s Republic of China. But several other countries possess or are suspected of possessing nuclear weapons, including India and Pakistan. The possession of nuclear weapons by a growing number of countries puts states lacking nuclear weapons, particularly those adjacent to nuclear powers, in a precarious position. How can we discourage such nations from developing their own nuclear weapons, without infringing on their sovereignty and their right to self-defense?
