McCormick Student Leadership Conference

The goal of the Student Leadership Conference is to provide the incoming newly elected executive board members an interactive introduction to leadership in McCormick. The one day event includes exercises in leadership, productive meeting techniques, and specific suggestions on leading an organization in McCormick. It is run by member of the Kellogg School of Management in cooperation with the McCormick School of Engineering. All McCormick student groups are required to send three executive board members and one regular member to the conference.

Engineering Week

Engineering Week is a week of events and activities during spring quarter for the benefit of undergraduates in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science (MEAS). Previously sponsored by Ford Motor Company, Engineering Week has recently been taken up by the McCormick Student Advisory Board (MSAB). Engineering Week is a great opportunity to get students more involved and connected. Through Engineering Week, MSAB endeavors to develop community within McCormick through a variety of events as per the McCormick Strategic Plan to encourage interdisciplinary interaction, spirit of collaboration and innovation.

This year we’re moving on from last year’s theme of “Innovation,” onto a new topic which will be voted on come Winter Quarter. We’re looking to maintain if not expand the connection between MEAS and Industry, through departmental connections as well as new contacts. We would like to spend much more effort on making this a well-publicized school event, and hope to attract sponsors as well as McCormick students in celebrating our hard work and aspiring professions.

Student Fellows Program

The fellows program is a mentoring program for McCormick students. The idea is that upperclassmen with matching majors can provide advice and serve as a mentor for younger students, in a way that faculty just can’t provide. Advice from someone who has already gone through what the mentees will be doing, and can give them advice along their way through their undergraduate career.

Students involved in the McCormick Fellows Program can access the
Blackboard site for important information and updates. If you are having trouble accessing the course in blackboard or have any questions/concerns about the program, please contact Jon Altenhofen.

Applications to be mentors for the Fellow Program in the 2008-2009 school year can be downloaded HERE. They are due June 11th, so apply now!

Quarterly Student Forum

A forum that is held quarterly for engineering students to voice their opinions and concerns, so as to improve the McCormick community and engineering experience. Some of the suggestions that have been made into a reality due to the forum include:

  • Tech Express Newsletter
  • McCormick Fellows Program
  • TechNotes Information Packets

Upcoming dates for the McCormick Student Forum will be announced in the Tech Express. If you have any suggestions or would like to express your opinion on certain issues, feel free to stop by at the quarterly student forum.

Gotaas Award

In order to encourage exemplary engineering research, the Harold B. Gotaas Award is presented annually to a senior who has demonstrated excellence in research as an undergraduate.

Harold B. Gotaas was selected as Dean of Engineering in 1957. The award is bestowed in memory of Dr. Gotaas, a former Dean of the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Dr. Gotaas earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and his doctorate from Harvard.

The Harold B. Gotaas Award is available to graduating McCormick seniors only, and is awarded as a part of Northwestern University's Commencement Ceremonies. This award represents the appreciation and admiration McCormick wishes to bestow on its undergraduate researchers. The McCormick Student Advisory Board is responsible for managing the award submission and judging process.

The application is due Friday, April 25, 2008 at 5:00 PM. You can download the application
HERE. Email via PDF-file to s-carr@northwestern.edu.
