UpBeat is an outreach program sponsored by the Music Learning Community at Northwestern University. UpBeat encompasses several volunteer opportunities in the Evanston, Illinois area.

The members of UpBeat believe that music is an essential form of expression. We believe that music provides a unique opportunity for teachers to connect with students. Not only do private lessons allow teachers to give students undivided attention, but they allow teachers to track students’ achievements, as well as events that occur in their personal lives. UpBeat hopes to create a situation that lends itself to a mentorship, and eventually, a friendship between student and teacher.

It is UpBeat’s goal to provide students with:

  • the best possible music education, including but not limited to technique, music theory, performance skills, style, ear training/aural skills, solfege, tonality, and body awareness/posture.
  • an understanding that music is a tool of self expression that they can use to convey their emotions to others.
  • a fun, relaxed, and productive environment in which to learn.

It is UpBeat’s goal to provide teachers with:

  • a positive and supportive environment in which to develop their teaching skills.
  • an opportunity to develop relationships with students and parents.
