Membership Duties

Club Dues

Membership dues are $45 a quarter, which covers all regular practices on the Evanston campus. Please make checks payable to Northwestern University, and give them to one of the club officers at practice.

If you're considering joining the club, you don't have to pay membership dues to come to a couple of classes and get a feel for the club.

Optional Costs

The club participates in 4-5 tournaments each year. If you would like to attend a tournament, there is usually a small registration fee, around $20 or $25. Transportation for these tournaments is provided through the Northwestern motor pool, and housing is provided by the host school.

Periodically, club members will take exams to advance to a higher belt. There is often a nominal fee associated with belt exams.

Release Forms

To use Northwestern facilities, you must have a current release form on file at the Patten Gymnasium office. If you have not filled out a release form this school year, talk to one of the club officers at practice. Otherwise, you will be ineligible to participate in tournaments and use university-owned transportation.

Equipment

The membership fee does not include a gi or sparring equipment. The gi is the traditional karate uniform, consisting of a white tunic and pants. A gi is not a requirement for club membership, but it is a requirement for belt exams or training at the regional dojo. Members can order a gi through the club for $35. To order a gi through the club, contact one of the club officers. A gi can also be purchased on your own if you wish.

Sparring equipment consists of fist covers and a mouthguard. A mouthguard can be purchased at any sports store for a few dollars. Fist covers and mouthguards can be purchased through the club as well, but beginners generally won't need sparring equipment for a while.
