The purpose of Kappa Delta Sorority is to promote true friendship among the college girls of our country by inculcating into their hearts and lives those principles of truth, of honor, of duty, without which there can be no true friendship.

Kappa Delta was founded in 1897 by four students at State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Farmville, Virginia. These visionary women had high hopes of providing a supportive environment where young women could achieve academic success, gain confidence to be their best selves and learn the importance of serving their community. They never dreamed that a century later the organization would have grown to encompass more than 129 active collegiate chapters, 485 chartered alumnae associations and over 190,000 members.

Kappa Delta has given over $7.1 million to the prevention of child abuse, over $2 million to Children’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and over $1 million to orthopaedic research. In 1998, Kappa Delta Sorority entered into a partnership with the Girl Scouts of the USA to provide mentoring and funding to young girls across the country.

In 1999 Kappa Delta created National Women's Friendship Day, celebrated on the third Sunday of every September.  Women all over are invited to honor their friendships on this day.
