The Healthy Living Unit is located within the Foster-Walker Complex. The hall is composed primarily of single occupancy rooms, but the ends are marked by the two quads.

HLU is designed so as to allow one to maximize his or her college experience. The hall and all of its events are substance free, and the general atmosphere is quiet and conducive to getting work done. In addition, this creates an atmosphere enabling residents to fully pursue the Points of Wellness.

However, HLU offers many social benefits to Residents and Non-Res Members alike. While HLU is formally a Residence Hall, it functions in many ways more like a Residential College. A multitude of social activities are planned for each quarter, ranging from trips to Chicago, to sit down dinners, to bonfires on the Lakefill. Room assignments are based on a point system akin to those used standard in the Residental Colleges; participating in HLU social activities and service opportunities earns members points which determine HLU seniority.

Aside from social events, HLU also organizes several groups of members to exercise together at many of the athletic facilities on campus. These groups are open to all members, and regular participation earns participants further HLU points. Members organize their own groups for such athletic activities and, upon inviting all HLU members, points are awarded. In addition, participation in sports and athletics outside of HLU can be used for HLU points.

In addition, HLU makes every effort to make its social gatherings joint ventures with other Residence Halls and Residential Colleges. These larger events make for interesting adventures, not just because of larger participation, but because these gatherings bring groups of people together that otherwise would never mix.
