FAQ!!

But I've never fenced before!! Do I need fencing experience to join NU Club fencing???

Hahaha, of course not. We welcome all levels of EXP. But make sure you have athletic shorts, athletic shoes and a water bottle. Shirts are optional. Just kidding. Wear a damn shirt. (??)

Do I need to buy my own equipment in order to fence?

No, fool!!! We have a well-stocked armory (yeah, an armory) where you can borrow equipment. Having your own equipment is the badass option, however, and many fencers choose to purchase their own sweet gear once they know what they're doing.

How much does it cost?

Currently, club dues are $65/yr. You'll get your money's worth, don't worry. We have the option of fencing the really hot girls on the varsity fencing team. That's worth, like, $1,000. At least.

Where do we fence? And when??

We fence in Patten Gym. Practice during the fall and winter quarters is Mon-Fri 3:30-5:30, and Wed 6:30-8:00. During spring quarter, there is no Monday and Friday practice.

DAMN B! That is a lot of practice. Must I get my sexy self to every practice to be a full member of the team?

Nah, we get that that you guys are students and may have class conflicts. We also know that occasional academic days may be necessary, but regular practice is highly encouraged especially if you want to dominate as a team, which is basically what we're all about.

What kind of tournaments does NU Club Fencing kick ass and compete in?

We compete in several USFA tournaments throughout the year, and many colligate tournaments. If you have friends who fence in other colleges, you may get the chance to own them in battle! Or you can kick some ivy-league ass.

What's the difference between colligate tourneys and USFA ones?

USFA tournaments are individual events where you can earn national ratings. Colligate events are fenced for a team and usually do not give out ratings.

But I wanna kick ass on the national level! Will the club pay for NACs?

Sorry. As sweet as we are, we're not loaded enough to be your sugardaddy.

Do you do conditioning?

Do we ever!! You'll be faster than Sonic the Hedgehog and fitter than Schwarzenegger in Running Man.

What are the…sword things or weapons or whatever?

Ah, classic question. The weapons are epee, foil, and saber. Both epee and foil are point weapons, meaning you have to hit with the point to score. Saber is a cutting weapon which allows a fencer to slash with the side of the weapon. You can read up on that here.
