Northwestern China Care's Jie Jie/Mei Mei Mentorship Program is designed for Northwestern students like you to become integral components of the cultural development of Chinese orphans. These children in the Chicago land area have been adopted by American parents. Since they have been raised amidst the American culture, they may have difficulty relating to their Chinese heritage. At a certain age (7+), these girls will start to question their position as minorities within predominantly Caucasian families and society; it will also be natural for them to have aversions to their own ethnicity.
Goals:
As a mentor, you will be establishing a relationship with one or more of these girls. Your main goal is to set an earnest, assertive example for them to understand the concept of being an Asian-American. On the other hand, your other important goal is to be their friend! After all, these are young girls and girls just want to have fun!
Mentor:
As a Jie Jie or Ge Ge's (male mentors are more than welcome to join the program ! !), it is highly suggested that you stay in contact with your mentee as much as possible, whether it be through e-mail, phone, or outings. Furthermore, our mentorship chair Bi-Shun, plans a variety of fun events on Northwestern's campus or within the Chicago area for mentors and mentees to communicate, bond, and play!
When:
To Be Announced. E-mails will be sent out on the listserv to announce mentorship dates. For more information about becoming a mentor, please contact the mentorship chair.
