Auditions 2009

September 15, 2009

Yup, it's that time of year again: time for a fresh new batch of Brown Sugar members! Auditions will be taking place this weekend (see below for exact times), so if you think you've got what it takes to join us on stage, then come on out!

All you have to do is prepare the verse and chorus of an English song and an Indian song, whether it's in Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, etc.; if you don't know any Indian songs, then that's fine too. Just sing whatever you feel most comfortable singing. We're not looking for any particular musical or voice styles, so there's really no need to find a song that you think we'd like to hear. We want to hear what YOU want to sing! Auditions will be taking place at the following times:

- Thursday, September 17, 3PM - 7PM
- Friday, September 18, 2PM - 8PM
- Saturday, September 20, 1PM - 9PM
- Sunday, September 21, 1PM - 3PM

Auditions will take place in the Music Administration Building, 711 Elgin Road. Directions are very easy: just go to Burger King, and MAB is the building directly across the street from it. You can sign up to audition at the Norris Folders (front desk of the Norris student center), or just shoot us an e-mail at tshastry@northwestern.edu. Feel free to ask us any questions, too! For more information about auditions and to stay updated, join our Brown Sugar auditions Facebook group.

We will also be performing a few times this week: a performance in Elder Hall on Tuesday night, at A Cappella Fest on Wednesday night in Cahn Auditorium, and on Thursday night (TBA). Head over to our Upcoming Performances section for more information.

Hope to see you at auditions!

BSug Love,
Mannie

Spring Quarter '09 Update

April 1, 2009

This update is long overdue, but it's only because Brown Sugar's been so busy this past quarter. We have many exciting things happening in the next few weeks, and we're pretty sure you're going to like what you see and hear.

We started off winter quarter with auditions and took four new members. We're really excited to have Beau Garrett, Arvind Krishnan, Tara Patel, and Mohini Kundu in the group now.

With our new members, we embarked on a rather busy February. On February 7th was the annual SASA Show in Cahn Auditorium, where Brown Sugar performed two songs, "Taking Over Me" and "Khuda Jaane." The next weekend, on February 14th, the group went to Iowa City, IA for Gathe Raho, an a a cappella competition hosted by the Indian Student Association at the University of Iowa. The competition was a great experience; we met many other South Asian a cappella groups from other schools, and we performed the best we have done all year. We cannot wait to go back to Iowa next year to compete again. To finish the month off strong, we had an on-campus show, "Corruption," on February 21st in the McCormick Tribune Center featuring Chandani, an all-female a cappella group from the University of Illinois. Our Rod Blagojevich-themed show was a big success: the turnout was amazing, the crowd loved the skits and songs, and the Daily Northwestern featured us, including the picture on the left, on the front cover of the Monday issue of the paper!

This quarter, Brown Sugar does not plan on doing as many performances as last quarter because the third studio album is set to release next month! We will be in the recording studio all of this month putting the finishing touches on the album, which is as of yet untitled. The CD will be released in physical format and digitally on iTunes as well. As a culmination of the great year Brown Sugar has had, we will be releasing the album at our annual show, which is also our 10 year anniversary! The show is going to be big, and hopefully many of the alumni from the past 10 years will be present. More details on the CD and the show will be posted as they become available (I promise) so keep an eye on the website. Until then...

BSug Love,
Mannie

AUDITIONS + Brown Sugar on iTunes

September 15, 2008

We hope that everyone had a great summer and is ready to start up school, either for another year or for the first time at Northwestern. If you are interested in auditioning for Brown Sugar (and we hope all of you are!), auditions will be held this Thursday from 7:30 to 10:30 PM and this Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. They'll take place in the Music Administration Building, which is right across from Burger King on Elgin Road. For auditions, you just need to prepare the verse and chorus of an English song and a Hindi song; if you don't know any Hindi songs, then that's fine too. To sign up for auditions, you can sign up at the Norris Folders (front desk of the student center), after our performances on Tuesday and Wednesday, or just shoot us an e-mail at auditions@brownsugarnu.com. If neither of those audition times work for you, send us an e-mail and we'll find a time that works for you. Feel free to ask us any questions, too! For more information about auditions, join our Brown Sugar auditions Facebook group.

We will also be performing twice this week: a Freshman Quad performance on Tuesday night and A Cappella Fest on Wednesday night in Cahn Auditorium. Head over to our Upcoming Performances section for more information.

Lastly, we'd like to announce that Brown Sugar's 2006 album, Rhythm Room, is now available on iTunes! If for some reason you never bought this album, you can now buy it digitally from there and feel all the BSug love on your computer and iPod. Click here to see the album on iTunes.

So, audition this weekend for Brown Sugar, come see us at Freshman Quad and A Cappella Fest, and buy Rhythm Room. Keep an eye our for future updates about our fall show and upcoming album.

Spring quarter 2008

May 9, 2008

Hey fans,
The Upcoming Performances section has been updated with two upcoming performances before the year ends. We'll be performing at the Freshman Quad's (Elder Hall and Hinman-Lincoln) munchies on May 21st and at NACCA's "A Cappellooza" on June 7th. Right now we're hard at work working on our next album that should be released next spring.

We recently performed in Peoria, IL, where we received a GREAT response. Thanks to everyone who came to the show! Of course, you can see videos from our performance there on our Facebook.

Also, audition information for next year will be posted within the coming months for anyone and everyone interested in trying out in the fall. We hope to see as many of you there as possible! Until next time...

BSug Love,
Mannie
