Application now available for Classes Winter Quarter 2010
Participants enroll in a student facilitated ASB Class for Pass/No Pass credit through SESP during Winter Quarter 2010. All enrolled students participate in a related service learning trip with their class from March 20- 28, 2010.
Childhood Poverty in America and Abroad - Wednesday 6-9 PM- Guatemala Trip - Around $1,000
Course Description: This course aims to give a broad overview of problems faced by children living in poverty, both in developing countries and in the United States. By considering the many factors that contribute to a child’s development, we hope to improve our understanding of efforts to improve the lives of children around the world. The course will spend each week studying a different facet of life, ranging from various aspects of health to human rights to education. Course materials will include guest lectures, academic readings, news articles, films, and more. _______________________________________________________________________
Site Description: Casa Guatemala is a home and school for over 250 orphaned, abandoned, or abused children between 5 and 16 years old. The orphanage is located in the jungle on the banks of the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. They have a full school and also run an organic farm. As volunteers, we will work with the children and teachers as well as do physical work like painting, building, and repairs.
Services for Individuals with Disabilities - Tuesday 6-9 PM - New Orleans Trip - Around $300
Class Description: This class will focus on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and the services available to aid them in overcoming these challenges. Students will learn about the importance of promoting tolerance, providing education and protecting the rights of people with disabilities. Through field trips, guest speakers and service on campus, the class hopes to help students develop a passion and ability to advocate for, and provide support to people with disabilities in the future. _____________________________________________________________________
Site Description. Volunteers of America - Greater New Orleans serves both children and adults with developmental disabilities in southern Louisiana through two supportive programs that provide in-home support as well as community group homes for people with a variety of disabilities. Students may paint or help renovate the community homes in addition to interacting with residents and learning about the unique issues that people with disabilities continue to face in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Migrant Worker's in Chinese Society -Tuesday 6-9 PM - China Trip - Around $1,500 *
Course Description: China’s rural-urban internal migration is the largest peacetime population movement in history, often estimated by researchers at 140-220 million people. Migrant workers have played a crucial role in China’s recent economic development. In Migrant Workers in Chinese Society, we will learn about China’s rural-urban migration from multiple perspectives: for example, anthropological, economic, political, psychological, and legal. We will use theories from these different disciplines to gain a better understanding of internal migration’s impact on Chinese society. Throughout the course, we will explore questions such as: What role have migrant workers played in China's recent development, and where do they fit in Chinese society? What factors have caused or affected internal migration in China? What is the relationship between migration and other social or political issues that China faces? _____________________________________________________________________
Site Description: Home Sweet Home aims to equip those with special needs to reach their fullest potential in society. Having three homes, a sewing and crafts workshop and an office and business training workshop in Shanghai, the social enterprise caters to different needs of the community. HSH provides vocation training among other forms of education to empower the needy with vocational skills while also providing a platform to market the goods they produce. HSH also takes part in donation drives which involves collecting and distributing donated items such as stationery and soft toys to other organizations that serve the needy, such as migrant schools, schools for homeless children and schools in rural areas.
