Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Theta Alpha Chapter)

On January 13, 1913, 22 undergraduate women on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. started a revolution of their own, with the creation of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. True to its mathematical symbol, Delta has been committed to social change for almost a century. In the spirit of their founders, the Theta Alpha Chapter, on Northwestern’s campus, was chartered on January 9, 1971. Today, the dynamic women of the Theta Alpha Chapter range from activists, pageant participants, magazine editors to researchers and sports journalists. Known on campus for their service as well as their overall leadership, the chapter keeps the community at the heart of their initiatives. Not a day goes by (literally) when they are not doing community service, social action, or politically-oriented programming. With their four weekly service projects, they implement their national Five-Point Thrusts: Educational Development, Economic Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. The chapter has been nationally recognized for such programs as the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, "The Cost of Frontin’" Financial Fortitude Workshop, and "Touch the Sky" College Preparatory Workshop (in collaboration with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.). Annual events include (but are not limited to): Dessert with the Deltas, Fall/Spring Service Forum, HIV/AIDS Testing and Awareness Workshop, Founders Day Sip, May Week, and the Jabberwock Scholarship Ball. This award-winning chapter continues to raise the bar, defining themselves as far more than a social club—but a sisterhood committed to community service, social justice and the empowerment of youth.

LPH Goals 1. Recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies 2. Stimulate interest in the field of communication 3. Promote and encourage professional development among communication majors 4. Provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange relationships between faculty and students 5. Establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students 6. The Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), founded in 1925, is the nation's only certifying agency for college and university honor societies. ACHS sets standards for organizational excellence and for scholastic eligibility for the various categories of membership: general, specialized, leadership, freshman, and two-year honor societies. To assure member participation in governance, honor societies must be structured on a membership basis so that the interests of individual members are advanced. Members and society-at-large are protected by the standards of excellence of the Association of College Honor Societies. Not all organizations calling themselves "honor societies" subscribe to the high honors' standards of ACHS. Candidates for membership should assure that the honor society in question meets the rigorous standards of ACHS—both the business model and the scholastic eligibility criteria.

Zeta Tau Alpha

Zeta Tau Alpha was founded October 15, 1898, by nine women at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Farmville, Virginia. Only 14-15 years of age, these young women desired permanence to their friendships and hoped to perpetuate their sisterhood long after college. The Founders chose the formal name, the patron goddess Themis, and the badge. Today, ZTA is the third largest of the Panhellenic organizations, with 237 chapters across the country. Our chapter, Alpha Phi, is the 46th link in the chain of chapters. Our beautiful home is located in the sorority quads at 710 Emerson Street in Evanston, Illinois.
