The Northwestern Aikido Club is a student club dedicated to the study of the martial art aikido. Aikido is a dynamic, powerful and graceful art founded early in the 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba. Training emphasizes decisive techniques of defense (throws, joint-locks, strikes, and immobilizations) as well as traditional weapons training (long sword, staff, and knife). These are practiced within the framework of a philosophy that seeks to avoid harming others whenever possible. Though a relatively modern art, Aikido is a potent distillation of centuries of martial knowledge. Through its techniques and principles, it transmits the most noble teachings of Japan's samurai tradition. Aikido is practiced by thousands worldwide, not only for fitness and self-defense, but as a vehicle for deep personal development. All Northwestern undergraduates, graduate students, staff members, and faculty are welcome to join the club. No experience is necessary and students may join during any time of the year. For more information, please visit our website, http://groups.northwestern.edu/aikido/.

The Northwestern Women's Club Ice Hockey Team was founded in 1998 to promote the sport of women's ice hockey on Northwestern's campus and to allow prior hockey enthusiasts a chance to continue playing. Women's ice hockey is a fast-paced, non-checking game, involving a high level of teamwork; it's a great source of healthy exercise, and undeniably exciting. Our team is made up of players with vastly different backgrounds, experiences and abilities in hockey - some have played on competitive travel teams, all-star teams, regional teams, high school teams, or men's teams, while other players include former figure skaters and women who had never played prior to college. We strive for a fun environment, but we also pride ourselves in being competitors; we often finish seasons first in our division and even as Women’s Central Hockey League (WCHL) Champions. We welcome any and all girls who have played hockey in the past or have a strong interest in it, we just ask that you're willing to skate hard shifts for the squad. So lace up your skates, and we'll see you on the ice.
The team practices twice a week and then has matches (typically in the Chicago area) on Saturdays during the fall and spring. Home games are played on Long field. During the winter, practices focus on skill development and conditioning. There are no try-outs, and no prior experience is necessary, so anyone who comes out to play is immediately welcomed on to the team.
